Once upon a time there was an Emperor named Kuzco who ruled a magnificent kingdom. He was spoiled rotten! One day he called a peasant named Pacha in to meet with him. He told Pacha that he was going to destroy his village so that he could build a royal vacation house called Kuzcotopia. "Where will the people of my village live?" Pacha asked. "Don't know. Don't care." Kuzco said selfishly.
Yzma was Kuzco's nasty adviser. She liked to sit on the royal throne and be mean to the peasants. Kronk was Yzma's strong but clumsy assistant. He did whatever Yzma wanted. One day Kuzco got mad and fired Yzma. She and Kronk tried to poison Kuzco that night at dinner. The drink they gave him turned him into a llama.
Yzma told Kronk to knock Kuzco out and get rid of him once and for all. Kronk was confused. But he still stuffed Kuzco in a sack and headed for the canal. Then, after dropping the sack containing Kuzco into the canal, Kronk felt terrible. At the last second, Kronk decided not to obey Yzma's orders and saved Kuzco just in time. But then Kronk tripped and the sack landed on Pacha's cart!
At first, Pacha had no idea that the emperor was in a sack on his cart. But when he got home and opened the strange sack, a funny-looking llama popped out. Kuzco and Pacha recognized each other immediately. Pacha was shocked to see Kuzco, the llama, at his house. He told Kuzco that he would take him back to the palace if he would agree not to build his summer castle on his village. Kuzco rudely refused and stomped off into the dangerous jungle.
After tromping through the jungle for awhile, Kuzco met a nice squirrel named Bucky who offered the emperor an acorn. He was very rude to him. "Hit the road Bucky!" Kuzco shouted. Then Kuzco tumbled down a hill and into a pack of jaguars! Pacha rescued him just in time. In return, he made Kuzco agree not to destroy his village. Slowly, Kuzco learned that he and Pacha had to cooperate and work together to get through the jungle.
Meanwhile, back at the palace, Yzma was the new ruler. Then she found out that Kuzco was still alive. "You bumbling fool!" she shrieked at Kronk. Then she ordered him to search for the missing emperor-llama.
While searching for Kuzco, Yzma and Kronk met Bucky the squirrel, who told him that he saw a talking llama. They knew it must be Kuzco. Later, at a funky jungle restaurant, Kuzco (who was disguised as Pacha's wife), overheard Yzma and Kronk talking about how they had plotted to kill him. Kuzco was stunned. He ran to find Pacha, who was gone. For the first time, Kuzco realized how important it was to have a friend.
Kronk remembered that Pacha drove the cart that carried Kuzco away! He figured that if they found Pacha, they would find Kuzco! For once, Kronk was right. Kuzco was with Pacha. Kuzco had found his one true friend among a herd of llamas.
But Kuzco wasn't out of trouble yet! Yzma and Kronk headed to Pacha's house to find Pacha and Kuzco. Luckily, Pacha's family stalled them while Pacha and Kuzco headed off to the palace!
When Kuzco and Pacha finally made it to the palace, they raced to the lab to search for the potion that would change Kuzco back into a human. Suddenly Yzma appeared and ordered Kronk to "finish them off!" When Kronk hesitated, Yzma dropped him through a trap door.
Pacha grabbed the human potion from Yzma but the bottle fell to the floor. Yzma then tipped over a whole shelf of potions -- they all looked the same!
Yzma called the palace guards, who chased Pacha and Kuzco outside. They had just two bottles left. One would make Kuzco human again. But Yzma got ahold of one of the bottles. It turned her into a cat!
Suddenly Pacha slipped. He grabbed onto the palace wall, but was losing his grip. He hung onto Kuzco for dear life. Now Kuzco had to choose: either let go of Pacha and grab the potion, or save his friend's life. Finally, Kuzco actually did the right thing; he pulled Pacha to safety and saved his life. But Yzma had the human potion! Just then Kronk opened the door and accidentally flattened Yzma the kitty! She dropped the potion, and Pacha caught it. Kuzco could finally become human again.
Later, Kuzco decided to build his summer home on a different hill. He spared Pacha's village after all. Soon, Kuzco was enjoying village life in a small hut, built on the hill right next to Pacha's. It wasn't Kuzcotopia, but Kuzco was happy anyway. For the first time in his life, he felt loved and at home.
